"You cannot be present and wrong at the same time."— Gabrielle Roth

Our conditioning creates limiting beliefs that become the internal voices that trigger negative patterns when we face challenges in sports and life. The bigger the stage, the more our patterns get activated.

These automatic mental patterns shape how you think, feel, and respond in crucial moments. Every instance of stress, anxiety, self-doubt, and frustration stems from these limiting patterns. They don't just impact your game—they undermine your true potential.

How We Limit Our Potential

You have two very different regions in your brain.

The voices in our head that generate negative emotions is not who we are. They exist in the brainstem, limbic system, and parts of the left brain. They produce all of your stress, anxiety, self-doubt, anger, shame, guilt, frustration, and mind chatter. They pull us into the past and the future because we they have stored our painful past experiences. However, staying in these emotions hurts your ability to see clearly and rob us of our potential to live fully.

Your Sage lives in an entirely different region of your brain, the middle prefrontal cortex, “empathy circuitry,” and parts of the right brain. It generates positive emotions while handling life’s challenges. These include empathy, compassion, gratitude, curiosity, joy of creativity, and calm, clear-headed laser-focused action. This region is wired for creativity and big-picture awareness of what is important and the best course of action.

Activating this region results in release of endorphins that counter the negative impacts of stress-induced cortisol.

The Thrive Region

The Survive Region

When early humans faced a mammoth the brain triggered a survival response — fight, flee or freeze. Stress hormones flooded the body. Every resource went toward staying alive.

That system was essential then. The problem is it activates in exactly the same way when a player steps on the ice for a big game. The brain cannot tell the difference between a mammoth and hockey game.

When a player feels pressure the brain triggers the same survival response it used to fight mammoths. The amygdala cannot tell the difference between a predator and public speaking, a hockey game...

Add to that the Default Mode Network — the brain's background chatter — endlessly replaying the past, worrying about the future and asking "how am I doing?" — and pure performance becomes almost impossible.
Both systems were built to protect you. Neither was built for hockey.

Survival

Neuroplasticity: The Key to Shifting the Balance of Power

Your brain is made up of neurons. When a signal travels down a neuron, it results in activation of other neurons based on synapses that connect neurons. But there are multiple choices for which direction the signal would travel. The question is which neuron will be activated. Every time a neuron activates another neuron, they become more closely wired together, making it more likely that the signal will go in that direction the next time around. This constitutes a “neural pathway.”

This is how a repeated action becomes an automatic habit. In Positive Intelligence®, we use the powerful 10-second PQ Rep technique as a way of intercepting the old Saboteur responses, so we can pause and choose a new Sage response. Repetition results in Sage neural pathways (muscles) to counter the old Saboteur muscles. That is why our training results in sustained change, as opposed to results fading over time. Mental fitness is about building mental muscles and not just stopping at insights.

OBSERVE

The inner critic, the self-doubt, the tightening before a big game — none of it is who you are. It is conditioning. Patterns formed from past experiences that your nervous system still carries as if the threat were real. The first step is simply to see them — clearly, calmly, without adding another layer of judgment on top of what is already there.

EMBRACE

Your triggers are not your enemy. They are your teachers. Every moment of discomfort, every reaction that surprises you, every sensation that arises under pressure — each one is pointing to something ready to be understood. The courage to turn toward what you feel rather than away from it is where the real work begins.

RELEASE

The wound was real. The story attached to it — that you are not enough, that failure defines you, that you must earn your place — that is the conditioning. When you stop carrying the story, the energy it consumed returns to you. What remains is presence. What flows through is the intelligence that was always there.

TRUST

THE PATH BACK TO YOURSELF

The body already knows. Thousands of hours of training live in your nervous system — waiting to express themselves freely. What blocks them is the controlling mind that second-guesses every move. Trust is the decision to stop managing and start playing. To take the leap before the mind talks you out of it.

What Makes the Program Different?

Most programs work on the surface. Techniques fade. Insights are forgotten. The pressure returns and so does the old pattern. This work goes to the source. The shifts that happen here do not fade because they do not live in your notes — they live in you.

Pure performance is not something to build — it is something to uncover. The skill is already there. What blocks it is the conditioning, the fear and the patterns that activate precisely when you need to be most free. We go directly to the source of the interference — and remove it..

Performance is not separate from who you are as a human being. How you think, how you feel, how you carry yourself off the ice — it all shows up on it. This work develops the complete inner foundation — presence, self-knowledge and trust — that elevates not just your game but every dimension of your life.

The Voices That Limit US

Timothy Gallwey called it Self 1 — the overcritical, controlling voice that interferes with what the body already knows how to do. It whispers that you are not enough, that failure is dangerous, that you must earn your place. Seeing it clearly is the beginning of freedom from it.
